Why Firewood Crates Are Better Than Bulk Bags
Share
A smarter, more efficient choice for trade customers
Bulk bags have long been a familiar option for trade firewood supply, however, when considering transport efficiency, product quality, waste reduction and resale value, crates consistently outperform bulk bags. For merchants and retailers supplying firewood at scale, crates offer a more efficient and profitable solution.
1. Crates Protect and Increase Margins
Firewood stacked in crates offers fixed, known internal volumes. Because logs are tightly and consistently stacked, there is no load settling, no compression loss, and minimal waste. Bulk bags, by comparison, can slump and vary considerably in volume and so lead to inconsistencies in resale value.
2. Crates Stack Higher and Transport More.
One of the key advantages of firewood crates is their rigid structure, allowing them to be stacked safely, often double or triple, unlike bulk bags that slump and lose shape, and can generally only be stacked twice. The crates tight and rigid packing allows us to increase the volume transported per load, reducing haulage costs, number of deliveries and fuel use. For trade customers handling regular or high-volume orders, this can deliver a significant margin benefit.

Transport is a large part of the cost so maximising every load can make a significant difference in the competitive resale price and margin. Crates consistently deliver close to double the loose volume per load when compared to bulk bags. For trade buyers, this means fewer vehicle movements, lower logistics costs and improved supply efficiency.
| Product Type (loose volume) | Max Units per Load | Stack Configuration | Loose Volume Equivalent |
| 1.2m3 bulk bags | 44 units | Double stacked | 52.8m3 |
| 1.42m3 crates | 72 units | Triple stacked | 102.24m3 |
| 1.6m3 bulk bags | 22 units | Single layer | 35.2m3 |
| 2.29m3 crates | 48 units | Double stacked | 109.921m3 |
3. Less Waste. Better Yield.
Firewood crates are hand-stacked rather than tipped, resulting in a cleaner, more consistent product with no brash or offcuts.
The outcome is less waste, higher sellable yield and fewer customer complaints, key considerations for any trade operation supplying firewood to end users.
4. Lower Warehousing, Handling, and Labour Costs
Crates can be stacked vertically to reduce floor space and warehousing costs. They also offer improved stock visibility and reduced labour time, streamlining handling and boosting overall yard efficiency. Unloading is done directly by forklift or telehandler with no tipping, restacking or clean-up.
5. Unbranded & Easy to Resell
Certainly Wood crates are supplied unbranded, giving trade customers full flexibility in presentation. Their open structure showcases log quality far more effectively than firewood concealed in plastic bulk bags. For additional revenue stream, consider our kiln dried kindling and natural firelighters.
6. Choose the Species That Suits Your Market
Crates allow trade customers to be selective with species, making it easier to match stock to customer demand.
Our crate species include:
- Ash (supplied in medium, large & extra large crates)
- Silver birch (supplied in medium & large crates)
- Silver birch & oak mix (supplied in medium, large & extra large crates)
- Mixed hardwoods (supplied in medium, large & extra large crates)
7. Certainly Wood Quality You Can Rely On
Certainly Wood kiln-dries beyond minimum requirements, with all firewood Ready to Burn approved to meet strict UK standards. This gives trade customers confidence in consistent quality, reliable ignition and efficient heat output across every crate.
By working with trusted suppliers and maintaining rigorous quality controls across our supply chain, we ensure that every load meets the expectations of both trade customers and end users.
